Daily routine in Zürich city‘s urban development agency has changed fundamentally since April 2011. Planners now not only view their projects from a three-dimensional perspective, but also combine them with project controlling data in a new IT tool. Geoinformationstechnologien sowie entsprechende Systeme zur Verwaltung und Aufbereitung von Geodaten sind auch in der Stadtplanung von größtem Vorteil. Das Amt für Städtebau der Stadt Zürich (AfS) hat diesen Nutzen schon frühzeitig erkannt und solche Systeme bereits seit den 1990er Jahren erfolgreich im Einsatz. Die jüngste Reorganisation des Amts verdeutlichte erneut, dass der Raumbezug in den meisten Projekten des AfS von zentraler Relevanz ist. In der Folge wurde eine Zuständigkeitsstruktur nach räumlichen Gebietseinheiten eingeführt: Die Organisationseinheiten der Stadtplanung sind nun nicht mehr thematisch, sondern in erster Linie gebietsweise strukturiert. Dank dieser räumlichen Gebietseinteilung kann heute besser auf die Bedürfnisse und Eigenheiten der Quartiere eingegangen werden.

Geoinformation technologies and the corresponding systems for geodata management and processing offer enormous advantages in town planning. Zürich‘s urban development agency (Amt für Städtebau (AfS)) recognised the benefits early and successfully introduced similar systems  as early as the 1990s. The most recent agency reorganisation once again emphasised that the spatial reference is of central relevance to the majority of AfS projects. As a result, a responsibilities structure based on spatial territorial units was introduced: the town planning organisational units are now no longer structured according to topics, but primarily according to territorial units. Thanks to these spatial territorial divisions it is now easier to take the needs and peculiarities of the individual quarters into consideration in planning.
