Für die Bewältigung der Aufgaben betreibt der Konzern seit längerem verschiedene und zum Teil GIS-basierte Systeme, wie das Umweltinformationssystem UIS zur Verwaltung von Anlagen und Stoffströmen, ein Altlasten-Expertensystem (AES), ein Deponie-Expertensystem sowie diverse Expertentools. Die konsequente Erweiterung des UIS um eine Karten- und Visualisierungskomponente für anlagen- und betriebsbezogene Umweltinformationen mit Ortsbezug erforderte die Entwicklung eines integrierten Geoinformationssystems.

At the operational level, the company has long been applying various systems, many of which are GIS based, such as the UIS environmental information system for managing plants and mass throughput, as well as a specialist problem-site (AES) management system, a specialist waste-dump system and a variety of other specialized tools. The ongoing, logical development of UIS to include mapping and visualization components for plant- and company-related environmental information concerning particular sites demanded the development of an integrated geo-information system.
