Tracking the Digital Shift: Eight Years of SoftwareTrends in Landscape Architecture Curricula in theUnited States

This study presents a longitudinal comparison of software instruction in accredited landscape architecture programs across the United States, drawing on survey data collected in 2016 and 2024 to document the integration of software in curricula, especially drafting, rendering, modeling, and publishing software. This provides insight into changes in digital literacy and curriculum design. Findings reveal an increase in the number of software programs taught, a rise in the instructional depth of established tools, and the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) as a cross-curricular technology. Most notable is the ascendance of Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino) over SketchUp as the leading 3D modeling software taught in academic programs, a shift that signals potential downstream adoption in professional practice. We conclude that while some trends reflect professional demands, others indicate academia assuming a leadership role in pioneering new digital tools and workflows.
