Seating Configuration, Visual Attention, and Perceived Social Affordances in Urban Greenways

Urban greenways support social life through localized gathering nodes, where furniture configuration influences navigation and social interaction affordances. This study examines how seating configurations shape visual attention, exploratory behavior, and perceived social interaction in greenway gathering spaces, while accounting for individual differences in perceived social support. A withinsubjects VR experiment exposed participants to three environments differing only in seating configuration: sociopetal, sociofugal, and mixed. Eye-tracking measured visual attention to seating elements, and movement data assessed exploratory behavior. Perceived social support was measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and social interaction affordances were evaluated through post-exposure questionnaires. Seating configuration was associated with differences in visual attention and perceived social interaction, with the sociopetal configuration receiving higher social engagement ratings and the sociofugal configuration eliciting higher visual attention to seating, particularly among participants with lower perceived social support. No significant differences were observed in overall movement extent, though navigation patterns varied spatially. These findings highlight seating configuration as a meaningful design variable shaping how greenway gathering spaces are visually attended to and socially perceived.
