Applying Sustainable CNC Model Making Materials in Landscape Architecture Education

This paper examines the integration of sustainable materials into CNC-based digital fabrication workflows in landscape architecture education. Through a mixed-method survey the paper reports on the challenges and opportunities experienced in integrating sustainable material use into CNC machining as part of a digital fabrication module within a 10-week digital media course. The study reveals how integrating materiality into digital fabrication discourse can enhance sustainability awareness, tactile learning, and design innovation while uncovering barriers such as cost, material accessibility, and time constraints. The findings advocate for embedding material experimentation into curricula, fostering a generation of landscape architects equipped to align digital craftsmanship with environmental responsibility.
