A Comparative Assessment of UGS Changes and Accessibility Using Per Capita Metrics: A Case Study of Budapest and Vienna

This study investigates Urban Green Space (UGS) trends, UGS per capita and accessibility to analyse and identify distribution at the city and district scales. Budapest and Vienna were chosen to examine UGS based on the most known UGS per capita and accessibility standards by using QGIS. Historical data from CORINE Land Cover data, Urban Atlas and population data from the census form the basis of this investigation. The results show a gradual increase in UGS both in Budapest and in Vienna. However, UGS per capita in Budapest increased from 53 to 71m², while in Vienna, it decreased from 64 to 55m². Both cities exceeded the World Health Organization’s ideal level of 50m2 UGS per capita, but they also displayed significant disparities in UGS distribution and inequality in UGS access at the district scale, with some areas having less than the minimum recommended 9m2/capita. Each indicator, such as UGS per capita and UGS accessibility, is recognized as a crucial metric for assessing urban sustainability. Furthermore, the parallel use of these indicators strengthens the assessment even further. It is noteworthy that the districts with the highest UGS values do not always exhibit the highest accessibility within 300m and 500m distance. The study underscores the importance of evaluating green space characteristics while emphasizing the crucial role of accessibility.
