To deliver a high-quality landscape project, innovative design concepts and a reasonable design framework can play a crucial role. The design concept initiation can be optimized by employing new design representation methods and technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). This research examines how VR/AR-enhanced design representation can affect design pin-up during the concept initiation process of a landscape project. Designers with various backgrounds and experience are involved as participants in their daily working environment. A real-world landscape project is used as the study case, while design pin-up sessions are arranged for memory tests and indepth interviews. The results show that both the design representation methods and the designer’s role in the group are important factors affecting participants’ perception and cognition of design concepts during the pin-up session. Employing VR/AR technologies in design pin-ups and discussions can significantly enhance designers’ sense of engagement and enjoyment, which helps them better memorize and understand important design information. Overall, this research clarifies the positive role of VR/AR-enhanced design representation methods in design communication during the concept initiation phase. It inspires further exploration of how VR/AR technologies can assist the entire design workflow of the landscape industry.
