Extreme Scaffolding – An Application of Blended Learning in Teaching Digital Landscape Architecture

The teaching of digital tools and techniques to landscape architects is a daunting task. This paper describes the combined use of two pedagogical interventions (scaffolding and blended learning) in the teaching of a range of digital techniques primarily through custom written scripts and associated software packages that are developed specific for landscape architectural use. The term “extreme scaffolding” here refers to the pre-preparation of an extensive list of scripts ready for use by students to accelerate their understanding and more importantly application of these tools into their design proposals. The interventions are especially important given the limitations in curricular space set aside for the teaching of such digital approaches and the results are demonstrated in the student work generated.
