AI as a Tool in the Landscape Architecture Design Process

Due to the increasing complexity of landscape architectural tasks, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gaining increasing interest. Focusing on a case study using the research through design methodology in a Master's level landscape architecture seminar, the paper explores the use of generative chatbots and text-to-image AI tools in the design and development of a Garden of Landscape Architecture on the university campus. Combining analogue and digital methods with AI, the research explores how these new tools can broaden the designer's perspective, enrich the design process and serve as research tools in their own right. Tasks ranged from initial conceptualisation using AI-generated text to the development of detailed designs using image-generating AI tools. The results suggest that AI can support the design process in landscape architecture by offering a variety of design alternatives and supporting complex decision-making processes. Furthermore, the integration of AI tools can lead to unexpected design outcomes.
