By the year 2030, the 20 km long highway section Aarau-Birrfeld of the Swiss national road A1 will be expanded from 4 to 6 traces. As an integral planning basis for all project participants, the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) commissioned a high-resolution and highly accurate 3D model of the complete infrastructure. At the beginning of 2018, BSF Swissphoto was contracted for the extensive surveying and processing tasks, which included the combination of different measurement methods as well as the combination of the resulting data sets for a georeferenced visualization of the project area. The goal of the project was to deliver a 3D model that would enable the planning of all necessary activities from the preliminary to the executive project without the need for further site visits of the project area by the planning team. The various products enabled the engineers of ASTRA to achieve a high level of confidence already in the planning period and to minimize costs for additional surveying work during construction.
