Concept of a Digital Communication Platform to Increase the Citizens’ Interest in Spatial Planning

Driven by the boom of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet PCs, the digital transformation of everyday life is progressing. While social media and digital forms of communication are already used extensively in the private sector, the digitalization of participatory processes in spatial planning is still in the beginning phase of development. Especially Geoinformatics and Geographic Information Systems offer innovative approaches to integrate citizens in planning processes. This paper introduces the concept PUBinPLAN, which aims at combining GIS-based crowdsourcing and Augmented Reality. Both methods will help to increase the interest in the participation and involvement of citizens. In addition to the design considerations of PUBinPLAN, first results of the application’s use are presented.
